National Safety Day is observed on March 4 every year to commemorate the foundation of the National Safety Council, which aims to raise awareness about safety measures that need to be undertaken to prevent accidents and mishaps.
The objective of the day is to renew the commitment of employees and the general public to work safely and ensure the integration of a safe and sound work culture and lifestyle.
History-
National Safety Day was observed for the first time in 1972, on the foundation day of the National Safety Council.
National Safety Council is a non-profit, self-financing and tripartite apex body at the national level. It was set up by the Government of India, Ministry of Labor and Employment on 4 March 1965 to generate and develop a voluntary movement on Safety, Health, and Environment. It is an autonomous body.
Significance-
Now in its 49th year, the day has grown to become a major national campaign that is widely celebrated across industries, departments, NGOs, and regulatory agencies in the country.
The main objective and vision of the National Safety Council have remained the same - To protect and serve the society and foster a preventive culture and scientific mindset among people.
“It is our belief that these issues are a basic humanitarian concern. We equally believe that their effective address is greatly facilitated if their intrinsic relationship with quality and productivity is well demonstrated,” reads the organization’s vision.
The campaign started as a single-day celebration on 4 March. But now has spread over a week from March 4-10. Theme of the year There is a new theme for National Safety Day every year. This year's theme is ‘Sadak Suraksha (Road Safety).’
