Every year on 22nd December, National mathematics Day is celebrated to honor the birth anniversary of mathematical genius Srinivasa Ramanujan. Before his death, at the age of just 32, he made a world record. He already proved 3500 mathematical formulas that scientists have still not been able to prove. The legendary Mathematician Srinivasa Ramanujan made an extraordinary contribution to mathematics analysis, number theory, infinite series and, continued fractions. From compiling over 3900 mathematical results and equations to getting discoveries named after him, his numerous assertions in mathematics opened up new vistas of mathematical research.
History- National Mathematics Day was first observed in 2012 when former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh declared this day as National Mathematics Day on February 26, 2012, when he was visiting the Madras University to pay tribute to Ramanujan's achievements and celebrated his 125th birth anniversary. Since then, it is observed every year on December 22 to honor Ramanujan's work in the field of mathematics. The day marks the birth anniversary of self-taught Indian mathematician, Srinivasa Ramanujan and his contributions in the field of mathematics. Ramanujan was born on December 22, 1887, in a Tamil Brahmin lyenger family in Erode, Madras Presidency.
Significance- The main objective to celebrate this day is to raise awareness about the importance of mathematics among the people for the development of humanity. As various initiatives are taken to motivate, enthuse, and inculcate a positive attitude towards learning mathematics among the young generation. On this day training is provided to mathematics teachers and students through camps and highlights the development and dissemination of teaching-learning material (TLM) for mathematics and research in related areas.
How this day is celebrated- National Mathematics Day is celebrated in colleges, schools, Universities, and educational institutions in India. Even international society UNESCO and India work together to raise the awareness and understanding towards learning of mathematics. Various steps are taken to spread knowledge to students and learners all over the world. NASI (The National Academy of Science India) is the oldest science academy situated in Allahabad. They celebrate National Mathematics Day, NASI conducts a workshop in applications of Mathematics and Ramanujan. The workshop is attended by popular lecturers and experts in the field of mathematics from across the nation. Speakers at the country and world level discuss Srinivasa Ramanujan's contribution to mathematics.
