Special Day Post
The National Energy Conservation Day is celebrated every year on December 14 with an objective to drive mass awareness about the importance and need of energy conservation and efficiency. It also focuses on making people aware of global warming and climate change and promoting efforts towards saving energy resources. The day highlights measures in which ordinary people can come together and lessen their energy consumption. This occasion has been celebrated since 1991 when it was led by the Ministry of power.
Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE), under the Ministry of Power, recognizes and encourages the endeavors of industries in reducing energy consumption by felicitating them with the National Energy Conservation Awards. BEE also awards prizes to the national winners of the annual National Painting Competition on Energy Conservation. The Energy Conservation Act in the country was also passed in 2001, to raise awareness about the need to make sustainable use of energy among citizens and curb unnecessary energy consumption.
Energy Conservation- It is the practice of using less energy. Small actions like turning off the light when you leave the room, unplugging appliances and machines when they’re not in use, and walking instead of driving are all examples of energy conservation and if applied by a big population, result in the conservation of a huge amount of energy. In simple ways, energy conservation means diminishing the consumption of energy by producing or using less of it. This can be in the form of using fewer energy services or using devices that require less energy. Most of the energy sources we use in our daily lives are ‘non-renewable’ and they cannot be reused and renewed. It is said that our energy resources may last only for another 40 years or so.
The celebration this year- This year, the ministry of power, under ‘Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav’, celebrated Energy Conservation Week from 8 to 14 December. The celebrations included three major activities- the National Energy Conservation Awards (NECA) for Industries, the National Painting Competition for school children, and the National Energy Efficiency Innovation Awards (NEEIA). The NEEIA was awarded to energy-intensive units in various sectors of the economy to recognize and highlight innovative energy efficiency technologies adopted by them to reduce energy consumption. The Power Ministry also organized several events ahead of the National Energy Conservation Day. A Certification Course on Home Energy Audit (HEA) was virtually launched by the BEE on 8 December.
