Every year 23rd December is celebrated as National Farmers Day which is also known as Kisan Diwas. This day is celebrated as a National Occasion every year inorder to promote awareness and to help and reward the farmers for their contribution to society. This day is celebrated to honor the birth anniversary of the nation's fifth prime minister, Choudhary Charan Singh.
History- The day was organized by our former Prime Minister of our country Chaudhary Charan Singh. Although he held his post only from 28 July 1979 to 14 January 1980. But during this time, he made various policies for farmers. Many policies of Chaudhary Charan Singh not only protected the interests of farmers but also inspired them to unite and fight with the landlords. He also made beneficial policies for farmers and united all farmers of India to fight against the odds. Like in 1939, he introduced the Debt Redemption Bill to give relief to the farmers from moneylenders. As an Agriculture Minister in 1952, Charan Singh worked toward abolishing the zamindari system and in 1953, he also got the Consolidation of Holdings Act passed. Under this Act, fragmented land holdings were pooled and then re-allotted to the farmers in a way that each got a single farm. Charan Singh also made effort to free the marginal farmers from being exploited. He also follows the famous slogan Jai Jawan Jai Kisan. He considered farmers to be the backbone of India's economy.
Why we celebrate this day- In 2001, the government decided to recognize Choudhary Charan Singh’s contribution to the agriculture sector and welfare of farmers by celebrating his birth anniversary as Kisan Diwas. Since then, December 23 has been observed as National Farmers’ Day. Generally, awareness campaigns and drives are organized across the country to educate people on the role of farmers and their contribution to the economy.
Significance- As India is predominantly a rural land, agriculture is the main source of income for most of the population. Despite being the most important source of livelihood for many people, many of us are not aware of the problems faced by farmers. Most people are unaware of the necessary information about this cult of country. Therefore, this event is focused on educating the public about these issues and empowering farmers with the latest information about them. As we know Life and the existence of the world cannot imagine without farmers. If we can do that, there is nothing better than raising their standard of living. So that this class provides us with necessities like fruits, vegetables, and paddy.
