Every year, 20th December is celebrated as International Human Solidarity Day to raise public awareness of the importance of solidarity, especially in the global arena. As per the UN, the day is marked to celebrate unity and diversity that is present across the globe. It works as a reminder for government to respect its commitments to the international agreements. It also encourages new initiative and plans for poverty and other global issues.
History-On 22 December, 2005, by a resolution 60/209 identified solidarity as one of the fundamental universal values that should be there in people of the 21st century, in that regard it decided to proclaim 20 December each year by UNGA. On 20 December 2002 United Nations General Assembly established World Solidarity Fund with an aim to eradicate poverty and to promote human and social development in developing countries in particular among the poorest segments of their population. In 2003, the assembly also set up World Solidarity Fund as a trust fund of the UN Development Programme.
Significance- In order to promote peace, human rights, and social and economic development, the United Nation creation brought the people of different nations together. The main principle of this organization is to bring harmony and unity among its members. It emphasized on the concept of collective security that depends on the solidarity of its members to unite to maintain international peace and security. The United Nation says that the International Human Solidarity Day is a day “to celebrate our unity in diversity; a day to remind governments to respect their commitments to international agreements; a day to raise public awareness of the importance of solidarity; a day to encourage debate on the ways to promote solidarity for the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals including poverty eradication; a day of action to encourage new initiatives for poverty eradication."
Theme - The theme and basic purpose of International Human Solidarity Day is to eradicate poverty and promote culture and cooperation, equality and social justice, which tends to human and social development particularly in developing nations. The theme of the day is not changed every year.
Logo- The logo of international solidarity day is a sketch of four human encompassing the earth with their arms collectively. The sketch of human is of different colors which indicates unity and solidarity.Because of these factors, it’s not possible to point to the same date year after year and call it the coldest day.
