Every year, 25th December is celebrated as Good governance day to mark the birth anniversary of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee. This day is celebrated to raise awareness among citizens of government accountability. Good governance day has been proclaimed as a working day for the nation. This day was founded in 2015 to honor Mr. Vajpayee. In line with this theory, good governance day has been proclaimed as working day.
History- On 23 December 2014, the ninety-year old former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, and Pandit Madan Mohan Malaviya (posthumously) were announced as recipients of India's highest civilian award for merit, the Bharat Ratna, by Indian President Pranab Mukherjee. Following the announcement, the newly elected administration of Prime Minister Narendra Modi established that the birth anniversary of the former Prime Minister would be henceforth commemorated annually in India as Good Governance Day. The Indian National Congress has criticized the ruling-Bharatiya Janata Party government for both setting Good Governance Day on the same date as Christmas as well as for declaring this date as a government working day, questioning the secularism in the nation.
Objectives of Good Governance Day-
• To make voters aware of the government's commitment towards the openness and integrity of its administration.
• Strong government is celebrated to promote people's well-being and improvement.
• It is praised for standardizing the operation of the government and for making it a highly efficient and responsible government for the national people.
• Implementing good and effective strategies to accomplish a good governance task in India.
• Enhance the country's growth and prosperity with strong governance.
• To get people closer to the government to become active participants in the process of good governance.
Why celebrated- On Friday, December 25, the nation commemorates India's former Prime Minister and veteran Atal Bihari Vajpayee's birth anniversary as Good Governance Day. The Day was launched in the year 2014 to honor Vajpayee as a mark of tribute towards India's one of the most loved political leaders.
Significance-Atal Bihari Vajpayee was born on December 25, 1924 in the erstwhile princely state of Gwalior (now a part of Madhya Pradesh). He stepped into national politics during the Quit India Movement of 1942 which hastened the end of British colonial rule. Good Governance Day 2021 acts as a reminder to the present government that it should be unbiased, transparent, and development- oriented. Atal Bihari Vajpayee was an Indian politician, extraordinary orator, and writer.
