TEJASHREE ANANT SALVI
Basant Panchami Festival
Basant Panchami is a major North Indian Hindu festival observed on the fifth day
of Magh mash (January - February). Vasant Panchami is also known as Saraswati
Puja or Shree Panchami. Basant or Vasant means spring in Sanskrit, and the
celebration celebrates the entrance of the spring season. On this day, Hindus
worship Goddess Saraswati and perform special poojas to enlighten with
knowledge and free themselves of ignorance. This year's Basant Panchami falls on February 5, 2022. Basant Panchami is traditionally celebrated as the beginning of
life and the coming of happiness. Spring is a season of rebirth and blossom. Fields
of crops and fruits begin to mature during this season, giving nature a golden coat.
As a result, the colour yellow is given special significance during the Vasant
Panchami celebration. People are seen wearing yellow clothing.
On Basant Panchami, children are taught to write their first words. Another
significant event on the day is the kite flying events. On this day, certain
communities pay honour to their ancestors, and Pitru Tarpan is performed.
