A petition has been filed in the Supreme Court by lawyer Puneet Kaur Dhanda seeking free and fair conduct of Assembly elections in West Bengal. Besides seeking a free conduct of the democratic exercise, Dhanda also demanded from the apex Court to pass an order to provide protection to opposite leaders. Dhanda also sought a probe report regarding the killings of BJP leaders in the eastern state. The petitioner said that the Election Commission should be asked to submit a detailed report regarding bogus voters and also take steps to remove them from the list.
The petition has been filed after the Supreme Court recently granted protection to BJP leaders Arjun Singh, Kailash Vijayvargiya, Pawan Singh, Mukul Roy and Saurav Singh from any coercive steps to be taken by the West Bengal Police in FIRs registered against them which are pending investigation. According to the petitioners, false FIRs have been registered against BJP leaders and that investigation should be transferred from the WB police to any other investigation agency.
West Bengal is slated to go polls in April, May next year. The ruling Trinamool Congress is facing a stiff challenge from the BJP.
