Supreme Court Justice RF Nariman delivered a lecture on the topic "Great Women of History" as the 26th Justice Sunanda Bhandare Memorial Lecture. He called "We have had a woman President. We have had a woman Prime Minister. We have never had a woman Chief Justice of India." He told that Justice Sunanda was the probable candidate who had become the first woman Chief Justice of India but her life cut her career short. She died of cancer in 1994.
He, in his lecture, told that time is not far off when India will have its first woman Chief Justice of India. Earlier, CJI SA Bobde also has remarked that the time for a woman Chief Justice of India has come. CJI was hearing the petition of the Supreme Court Women Lawyers Association for the abysmal representation of women in High Courts which is 11% and seeking the appointment of meritorious women lawyers as High Court Judges. CJI informed that many women lawyers declined to be a judge due to their domestic responsibility.
