OLYMPIC MEDALIST SUSHIL KUMAR ARRESTED FROM DELHI IN MURDER CASE
Sushil Kumar, a 38-year-old two-time Olympic medalist, was arrested in Delhi in connection with the murder of Sagar Dhankhar, a 23-year-old former junior national wrestling champion. The Special Cell of the Delhi Police's Southern Range has held him. The police have also arrested his associate Ajay Kumar, who was also absconding. Kumar had been on the run since May 5 when an FIR was registered against him under IPC Sections 302 (murder), abduction (365), and 120-B (criminal conspiracy) at Model Town police station. On May 4, Dhankhar, who had competed in the 97-kg Greco-Roman category, was beaten to death following a clash between two groups.
The arrest comes a day after Sagar Dhankar's family said that they received life threats from Sushil Kumar and demanded that he be charged and arrested for murder.
On the intervening night of May 4, 23-year-old wrestler, Sagar Dhankar, died and two of his friends were hospitalized after they were reportedly brutally assaulted by other wrestlers, including Sushil Kumar, inside Chhatrasal Stadium in the city's northern outskirts. According to the police, the brawl took place between Sushil Kumar and Ajay (now arrested), Prince, Sonu, Sagar Rana, Amit, and others in the parking area of Chhatrasal Stadium on May 4.
Delhi court released a non-bailable warrant against Sushil Kumar and six others in connection with the Chhatrasal Stadium brawl last week, just days after the two-time Olympic medalist was served with a lookout notice in the same event. Sushil Kumar had then filed an anticipatory bail plea filed, but it was dismissed by Delhi's Rohini court on Tuesday.
The Delhi Police had also announced a reward of Rs 1 lakh for information leading to the arrest of two-time Olympic medallist Sushil Kumar in connection with the Chhatrasal Stadium brawl. A reward of Rs 50,000 has also been announced for the arrest of his associate Ajay Kumar.
