In response to Sudan's ongoing military coup attempt, the US State Department said on Monday that it is withholding $700 million in emergency funding.
Spokesman Ned Price slammed the coup and declared that the complete support package would be suspended because the funds were "intended to promote the country's democratic transition."
The United States has called for the restoration of a civilian administration as soon as possible. The US had no prior knowledge of the military's plan to overthrow Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok, according to Price, and had been unable to contact the imprisoned civilian leader. Israel was striving to develop relations with Sudan at the time of the coup. According to Israel's official radio, a senior Sudanese envoy stated that the military's seizure of the country will have little effect on the normalisation process with Israel.
