Two US senators have asked President Joe Biden to lift the Countering America's Adversaries Through Restrictions Act (CAATSA) sanctions imposed on India for purchasing military weapons from Russia. Senators Mark Warner and John Cornyn, co-chairs of the US India Caucus, wrote to President Biden urging him to lift CAATSA penalties against India.
During the 19th India-Russia Annual Bilateral Summit in New Delhi on October 5, 2019, India and Russia signed a USD 5.43 billion contracts for the purchase of five S-400 surface-to-air missile systems for long-term security needs. The Russian S-400 systems may trigger CAATSA sanctions, according to Washington.
