The government increased ED Director Sanjay Kumar Mishra's term by a year to November 18, 2022, only days after the Centre passed laws allowing ED and CBI directors to serve for up to five years. Mishra was first designated as the ED director for a two-year term by an order dated November 19, 2018, and his offer letter was then modified retrospectively by the Central administration and his two-year term was substituted with three years by an order dated November 13, 2020.
Last Sunday, the government has issued two laws stating that the chiefs of the ED and the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) can henceforth have their terms prolonged by up to three years after the two-year minimum term.
