Sameer Wankhede, regional director of the Narcotics Control Bureau, and his complainant wife, presented a petition Mumbai court for a permanent injunction prohibiting social media companies from publishing false and malicious news/statements about them. The couple filed a civil suit in the City Civil Court in Dindoshi, Mumbai, against social media platforms like Google India, Facebook and Twitter; they allow people to communicate online. "Immediately block the people concerned who tried to defame and the character of the plaintiffs (of the couple) to be displayed on their platforms in any way, “the suit begged. Wankhede claimed in the suit, filed through the Rex Legalism law firm, that because his posting and place of work is in Mumbai, he comes into contact with people from the film industry and police officials.
The strategy was for social media sites and mainstream media to feed off each other in terms of defamatory content/news. The plaintiffs claimed that various news channels operate without restrictions via the social media platforms provided by the defendants, and that sponsored misinformation is being spread against them via these platforms. It was also claimed that the misinformation campaign against Wankhede is being carried out by those who are affected by Wankhede official investigations. According to the lawsuit, the social media companies failed to take action against the plaintiffs' defamation and smear campaigns. It was also claimed that statements were made solely on social media by political leaders and others "all of whom have sold their civic sense, conscience, morality, and so on either for money or a cheap ticket to Bollywood. As a result, the couple prayed that social media companies refrain from publishing such unsubstantiated and baseless posts about the couple or any member of their family on their websites.
