Chief Minister Charanjit Channi announced Wednesday that the Punjab ministry will drop all police investigations against farmers who burn stubble or agricultural trash, while nearby Delhi and the national capital region are engulfed in a toxic and dangerous smog due to the fires.
The ruling comes months before an Assembly poll in which farmers are expected to play a key role (because of farm law protests and stubble burning). Lawsuits brought during such rallies, according to Chief Minister Channi, will also be dismissed.
