Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced today that three unpopular farm rules that have been at the centre of major farmer demonstrations across the country for above a year will be repealed, only months before polls in areas like Uttar Pradesh and Punjab. The move coincides with the Guru Purab festival, which commemorates the birthday of Sikhism's founder, Guru Nanak, and is primarily observed in Punjab.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi supported the legislation, claiming that they were intended to reform the country's small and marginal farmers.
