The move coincides with the Guru Purab festival, which commemorates the birthday of Sikhism's founder, Guru Nanak, and is primarily observed in Punjab.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi supported the legislation, claiming that they were intended to reform the country's small and marginal farmers.
