Gujarat high court on 2nd Dec, Wednesday directed Gujarat government to pass an order directing people that People not wearing mask will have to offer community service at COVID care centres.
The Bench of Chief Justice Vikram Nath and Justice J B Pardiwala issued this direction after the state government took a stand before the court that it was not inclined to introduce community service for violators of social distancing and those not wearing masks at COVID care centres on non-medical positions. The Bench stated that “The stand of the state has left us with no other option but to issue such orders and directions considering the gravity of situation.”
The PIL was filed by Adv. Vishal Awtani, seeking an appropriate direction to the state to increase in fine for violating social distancing and not wearing masks.
On 27th Nov, the court said that imposition of fine on not wearing mask is not acting as sufficient deterrent amongst the public and the state government may consider making violators work at Covid-19 centres. It was just a suggestion though but it was decided by the court with the state government on Tuesday, 1 December.
