Section 144 was imposed in the sub-division till further orders, according to a notification issued Tuesday by the Dharmanagar Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) due to "high apprehension of disruption of peace and public tranquillity."
The notification prohibited gatherings of four or more people, as well as any types of processions, rally sloganeering, vehicle rallies, public speeches, and so on. There were also restrictions on carrying weapons and using loudspeakers.
The mosque and stores in the Panisagar sub-division, 155 kilometres north of Agartala, were vandalised on Tuesday, purportedly by a group of Vishwa Hindu Parishad activists protesting the recent demolition of Durga Puja pandals in Bangladesh. Both parties have filed a case with the local police station about the event, according to the SP. However, until the most recent reports, no arrests had been made.
