Trinamool wants PM Modi to fire Solicitor General Tushar Mehta
Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress to demand the elimination of Tushar Mehta because the Solicitor General of India as a consequence of his assembly with Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)'s Suvendu Adhikari, leader of the opposition in West Bengal assembly. To this, the Trinamool penned a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi seeking the immediate elimination of Mehta from his post.
Solicitor General Tushar Mehta's assembly with BJP chief Suvendu Adhikari raises "a few critical questions about the integrity of the post", stated Trinamool on this day. The letter, which was despatched to Prime Minister Modi seeking the Solicitor General's elimination became signed by 3 TMC MPs -- Derek O'Brien, Sukhendu Sekhar Roy, and Mahua Moitra.
The letter stated that Suvendu Adhikari, further to being a BJP chief, is also accused of numerous offences being investigated by the CBI and the ED. One of such cases is the Narada sting operation case, wherein Adhikari was seen taking bribes in videos once publicly circulated by the BJP. The other is the Sarada chit fund case, wherein the key accused Sudipta Sen had raised grave allegations against Adhikari. In both these instances, the TMC noted, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta is representing the CBI and has seemed before the judiciary in that regard.
As such, the "various news reports containing videos" about the alleged meeting between Adhikari and Mehta, who's advising such investigative agencies, display that there's a "direct conflict of interest" with the statutory obligations of the Solicitor General of India.
In addition to news reviews, the TMC in its letter noted tweets by prominent personalities, who've questioned such a meeting. The letter also found that the meeting, "curiously", happened right after Suvendu Adhikari met Union home minister Amit Shah.
"We have, therefore, reasons to trust that the sort of meeting has been organised to persuade the outcome of matters wherein Suvendu Adhikari is an accused, the use of the high offices of the Learned Solicitor General," the TMC letter mentioned. Thereby, the party demanded from the Prime Minister that Tushkar Mehta be eliminated from his posts in light of those developments.
