Today, Madras High Court in the case of Safai Karamchari Andolan v. Union of India and Ors. opined to issue guidelines to end this menace of manual scavenging. Now the matter is adjourned for a fortnight seeking replies from the state.
Safai Karamchari Andolan, an NGO, mentioned in the court that already six people have died due to manual scavenging this year and FIR are also not reported in this matter because of the mere accident of slip and fall. Earlier, on March 16 the Court ordered to hold municipalities responsible for the death of manual scavenging and since then no death case has been reported.
Chief Justice Sanjib Banerjee asked the state why the state not taking any step to eliminating this nonsense. Either adopt any machinery to clean sewage or replace the sewage system itself so that it does not require any human labour.
