The central government’s Appointment Committee has approved the appointment of retired Supreme Court judge, Justice Ashok Bhushan as the chairperson of National Company Law Appellate Tribunal (NCLAT).
The tenure would be four years long or till he attains the age of 70 or until further orders, whichever is earlier. Justice Bhushan will take in charge as the chairperson by replacing Justice SJ Mukhopadhaya, whose tenure was completed in March 2020.
Till the time new chairperson was appointed, Justice Bansi Lal Bhat and Justice AIS Cheema served as officiating chairperson. But, after retirement of Justice Cheema, Justice M Venugopal who is a former Madras High Court judge served as an officiating chairperson. Justice Bhushan was the Chief Justice of Kerala High Court and on 13th May 2016 he was elevated as the Supreme Court judge.
Justice Bhushan has been part of several landmark cases related to Ayodhya dispute, migrant workers issue, Maratha reservation, ex-gratia for COVID victims, etc
