As per reports, the government of India may finally be stepping in the most urgent and debatable matter of now-a-days i.e. the updated privacy policy of WhatsApp.
WhatsApp’s new privacy policy has cornered the people providing only two choices to them. Either one has to accept it or has to give up the messaging app next month when the policy comes into play.
The reports are indicating that the government has been collecting details and monitoring the issue from every prospective field to know whether it will really violate the “Right of Privacy” of the individuals or not.
The report suggests that the government is concerned due to the lack of a regulatory framework backed by a strong data protection law in the country. Also, the policy is lenient towards the users in European Union while there are wide-ranging terms for users in India.
For such situations, we require legislation like the Personal Data Protection (PDP) Bill of 2019 which is yet to be passed by Parliament but Europe is having General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) in place.
Even the traders' body CAIT, on Sunday, wrote to Information and Technology Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad demanding that "government should immediately restrict WhatsApp from implementing the new policy or put a ban on WhatsApp and its parent company Facebook".
