Authorities in Kashmir set up emergency helplines in various districts on Friday after the Meteorological Department (MeT) predicted heavy to very heavy rain and snow over the next 48 hours. According to a statement issued by the Met department today, "it is currently snowing in Gulmarg and Pahalgam, with light rain in scattered places." "Intensity is expected to increase throughout the day, with the main activity expected tonight and tomorrow (Jan 8) leading to heavy rain/snow in J&K." The disaster management authority has issued a medium level avalanche danger warning, advising people living in avalanche-prone areas not to leave their homes unless absolutely necessary. The minimum temperature in Srinagar was 2.6 degrees Celsius, Pahalgam was minus 0.4 degrees Celsius, and Gulmarg was minus 5.5 degrees Celsius. The lowest temperature of the night was minus 12.4 degrees Celsius in Drass, minus 10.5 degrees Celsius in Leh, and minus 9.8 degrees Celsius in Kargil. The minimum temperature in Jammu was 11.1, Katra 9.4, Batote 2.1, Banihal zero, and Bhaderwah 2.4.
