The Union Housing and Urban Affairs Ministry named Indore the cleanest city for the fifth year in a row on Saturday in its annual cleanliness ranking. For the third time, President Ram Nath Kovind's Swachh Survekshan Awards 2021 includes the cleanest State award for Chhattisgarh in the category of States with even more than 100 urban local bodies. Varanasi, Prime Minister Narendra Modi's seat, was named the cleanest "Ganga city."
Surat and Vijayawada were in second and third place, accordingly, among cities. The poll was conducted in 4,320 cities over 28 days, with responses from 4.2 crore people recorded, according to the MoHUA.
Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh were placed second and third, respectively, among states with over 100 urban local bodies. With fewer than 100 ULBs, Jharkhand has been deemed the cleanest state, followed by Haryana and Goa. Indore, Surat, Vijayawada, Navi Mumbai, New Delhi, Ambikapur, Tirupati, Pune, Noida, and Ujjain were the top ten cities with populations of over one lakh, in that order. Lucknow was ranked 25th among these cities.
