Justice Dama Seshadri Naidu stated that one of the biggest weakness of our Constitution is the ease with which we are able to make amendments. The scope for amendment and provision of the Constitution should be stringent, Bombay HC Judge said.
He spoke this at the fourth annual public lecture organized by the policy think tank, Vidhi Centre of Legal Policy on the subject‘Constitutional Culture In Public Life. ’
Justice Naidu also stated that the Indian Constitution is a document of compromises among conflicting values, both individual and of the society. Right to protest does not mean that you need to disrupt public life, so that people listen to you. Indian Constitution is a ever growing and ever expanding Constitution, he said. He also quoted Dr. B R Ambedkar, who had once opined that democracy was only a ‘top dressing’ in India.
However, while introducing the topic, the same should be made creative for students rather than presenting it as dry bones. Various features of American Constitution as well as the celebrated decision on abortion rights also found a mention.
