The Taliban asked the US on Wednesday to return Afghan assets blocked by Washington when the militant organisation seized control of Kabul, months after taking control of the country. According to sources, Washington took $9.5 billion in assets belonging to the Afghan central bank, causing a major economic crisis in the aid-dependent country, with civil servants going underpaid for months and the ministry of finance were unable to pay for imports.
Afghanistan's new leadership released an open letter urging the American administration to release "frozen assets of Afghan people."
