The Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) on Tuesday issued a notice to Cyber Crime Cell, Delhi Police regarding online rape threats to cricketer Virat Kohli’s daughter.
The commission took suo motu cognisance of media reports which stated that rape threats are being given to the nine-month-old daughter of Indian men’s cricket team captain Virat Kohli ever since India lost the T20 World Cup match against Pakistan. Following the defeat, Kohli voiced support for teammate and Indian pacer Mohammad Shami who was at the receiving end of online abuse and trolling.
The commission, while taking immediate cognisance of the matter, has asked the Cyber Crime Cell to register an FIR against those people who issued rape threats to a nine-month-old baby.
“DCW has issued a notice to police over a threat made on Twitter to rape Virat Kohli and Anushka Sharma’s daughter. Our chairperson Swati Maliwal has called this ‘shameful,’ and called for immediate arrest of the accused,” the commission said in a tweet.
DCW chairperson Swati Maliwal has demanded that those responsible for the rape threats be immediately tracked down and arrested.
“This is the time to stand behind our team not against them. Even if India lost to Pakistan, the players and their families don’t deserve hatred! I’m deeply disgusted to note that the 9 month old girl child of Virat Kohli is getting online rape threats! I expect immediate registration of FIR and arrests in the matter. Such people should be taught a lesson,” she said.
In its notice to the police, the DCW sought to be informed, by November 8, on the following counts: copy of FIR registered in the matter, details of accused identified and arrested, details of steps taken to arrest the accused if no arrest made thus far, and detailed action taken report.
