A Bill to set up a National Law University (NLU) in Tripura is set to be tabled before the State Legislative Assembly. Subject to the passing of the Bill, the University will run from the Tripura Judicial Academy building for the next academic session, and will be later be shifted to a new building. Tripura Law Minister Minister Ratan Lal Nath met with officials to push the plan for setting up a full-fledged NLU. A committee comprising State government representatives, judges of the Tripura High Court and legal experts will be constituted to suggest the process for appointment of the Chancellor, Vice-Chancellor and faculty members. This panel will also finalise the courses to be offered. Admission to the University will be through the Common Law Admission Test (CLAT). Should the Bill receive the green signal, the University at Tripura will be the 24th National Law University in the country. Vice-Chancellor of Hidayatullah National Law University and CLAT Convenor for 2022 Prof VC Vivekanandan said, "It is a very welcome step of setting up the NLU at Tripura which will give an opportunity to the aspirants from the North Eastern states and will also contribute to the national talent pool of the legal profession."
