Current CJI SA Bobde gave the name of Justice NV Ramana for the 48th CJI to the president. Incumbent CJI is going to retire on April 23. Maintaining seniority as the basis of the appointment of CJI, CJI SA Bobde recommended the name of Justice NV Ramana. President has signed off on the appointment letter of Justice NV Ramana. He is going to take oath on April 24.
Justice NV Ramana was appointed on February 17, 2014, to the Supreme Court. He is going to have a tenure of over 16 months which is the longest after a decade before he retires on August 26, 2022. Earlier to him, Late Justice SH Kapadia had a tenure of over 2 years in 2010. Late Justice YV Chandrachud is the longest-serving CJI where he served for over 7 years. His son DY Chandrachud is in place to be the next CJI in 2022 for a term of 2 years.
