The Calcutta High Court ordered a blanket ban on the sale and even the usage of firecrackers including green crackers, this year during Diwali. This ban will persist for all festivities of this year which includes Kali Puja, Chhath Puja, Christmas or New Years due to the prevailing Covid-19 situation.
A division bench comprising justices Sabyasachi Bhattacharyya and Aniruddha Roy instructed the police to keep a strict vigil on those who flout this rule and initiate legal action against anyone found violating the ban after having confiscated the crackers.
The court observed that it would be a tedious job for the police force to differentiate between the firecrackers under which they are sold.
“We can’t kill people by following judgments blindly,” remarked the court by allowing use of green crackers. The bench passed the order on a petition seeking re-imposition of the ban on firecrackers, an order which was passes by the court in 2020.
