After Pakistan defeated India by 10 wickets in a Group 2 match in the Super 12 stage of the ICC Men's T20 World Cup at the Dubai International Stadium on Sunday, the Jammu and Kashmir Police filed two FIRs against students from two medical colleges in Srinagar city for shouting pro-Pakistan slogans.
The FIRs have been registered under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA).
Nasir Khuehami, the Association's national spokesperson, called the UAPA charges against students "a harsh punishment."
Mehbooba Mufti, the president of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Jammu and Kashmir, urged people to celebrate Pakistan's victory over India in the match.
Following India's defeat to Pakistan in the T20 World Cup cricket match, at least ten Kashmiri students studying in two private educational institutes in Punjab claimed that they were assaulted and their hostel rooms vandalised.
While one incident occurred at Rayat Bahrat University in Kharar, Mohali district, another occurred on the outskirts of Sangrur town at the Bhai Gurdas Institute of Engineering and Technology. The Punjab Police have launched an investigation into the incidents.
"Students from Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, and Haryana barged into their rooms, thrashed them, and went on a rampage," said Nasir Khuehami, national spokesperson for the J&K Students Association.
Mehbooba Mufti said "Let's agree to disagree & take it in the right spirit like Virat Kohli who was the first to congratulate the Pakistani cricket team."
