According to the Times of India, a special court in Gujarat has condemned 38 of the 49 defendants in the case of the 2008 serial explosions in Ahmedabad to death.
The remaining 11 defendants have been given life sentences.
The accused had already been convicted under several statutes, including the Indian Penal Code, the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act, the Arms Act, and the Explosive Substances Act, for murder, sedition, and waging war against the state.
On February 8, Special Judge AR Patel convicted 49 of the 78 suspects guilty of various offences.
The punishment was handed out today by the Court.
According to The Indian Express, Judge Patel also granted 1 lakh in compensation to victims of the serial blasts.
The defence had argued for a lighter punishment based on mitigating circumstances, while the prosecution had relied on aggravating ones to create a case for the accused's death sentence.
On July 26, 2008, 22 bombs exploded in Ahmedabad, killing 56 people and injuring hundreds more. The Civil and LG hospitals were among the targets of the serial bombings. The explosions were claimed by the Indian Mujahideen.
