It was after 34 long years that the nation had witnessed its third policy on education. Even though the pandemic had already put into the plate a lot of challenges to be faced by the educational institutions, this new education policy will surely prove to be a game-changer. The expectations of this policy on average are all about reshaping the system of education in India. The methodology of teaching, as well as learning, has changed in due course of time. What was before as offline today is online, as a result, new software, technologies, courses, etc have got recognition which has increased the field of exploration and innovation. And among all this, this new education policy has come into a time where the reducing GDP has today become a matter of concern all over the world.
The Vision of the Policy
The National Education Policy 2020 examines the educational methodology that is embedded in the Indian spirit which donates straight away in changing India, i.e Bharat. It pursues to comfort and look after the ongoing lively knowledge society, by furnishing finest education to everyone, without any discrimination on the basis of religion, gender, caste, or creed and hence, giving an equal podium to grow as well as develop. It is a key step ahead to transform India into a global knowledge superpower. This Policy focuses that the uniform curriculum and pedagogy of the institutions should in all cases develop among all the students a deep and true sense of respect towards the Fundamental Duties and the Indian Constitution. It should imbibe Constitutional values among its students so that there is a feeling of bonding and compassion towards one’s country, as well as conscious awareness of one’s roles and responsibilities in this rapidly changing world. The true vision of this. The policy is to instill among the learners and the leaders of tomorrow, a deep-rooted pride, to be an Indian and love for the nation, not only in thoughts, but also in their spirit, intellect, and deeds. The policy also focuses on developing knowledge, skills, values, and dispositions that support the responsible commitment to human rights, sustainable development, and global well-being, thereby reflecting a truly global citizen. NEP 2020 has its base of five pillars: Affordability, Accessibility, Quality, Equity, and Accountability– to ensure continual learning.
The NEP 2020 shouts for significant transformations in both schools as well as a higher education which can prepare the future generation to thrive and compete in this new digital era. Hence, there is much emphasis and stress upon multi-disciplinarity, digital literacy, written communication, problem-solving, logical reasoning, and vocational exposure in this document.
Advantages
There are many advantages of the establishment of the National Education Policy 2020 for the nation’s educational system as it will be a backbone to it. There are numerous gifts given by the policy to the educational mechanism as follows:
1. Approximately two crore school students will be able to come back to educational institutes through this new approach.
2. For children up to the age of 8, a National Curricular and Pedagogical Framework for Early Childhood Care and Education will be designed and developed by NCERT.
3. According to the national education policy 2020, the 5+3+3+4 structure will replace the existing 10+2 structure. This structure is focused on students’ formative years of learning. This 5+3+3+4 structure corresponds to ages from 3 to 8, 8 to 11, 11 to 14, and 14 to 18. 12 years of schooling, 3 years of Anganwadi, and pre-schooling are included in this structure.
4. According to the national education policy 2020, the Education Ministry is to set up a National Mission on Foundational Literacy and Numeracy. The responsibility for successful implementation for achieving the foundation of numeracy and literacy for all students till class three falls upon the states of India. This implementation is scheduled to be done by 2025.
5. Parakh national education policy is to be set up by the Government.
6. Special daytime boarding school “Bal Bhavans” to be established in every state/ district in India. This boarding school will be used for participation in activities related to play, career, art.
7. According to the national education policy 2020, an Academic Bank of Credit has to be established. The credits earned by the students can be stored and when the final degree gets completed, those can be counted.
8. To make the students prepared for future pandemic situations, online academics will be promoted on a larger scale.
9. In accordance with the national education policy 2020, Multidisciplinary Education and Research Universities at par with the IITs and IIMs will be set up in the nation. These are scheduled to be set up for the introduction of multidisciplinary academics.
Drawbacks
As in accordance with the new national education policy 2020, students who are willing to complete their graduation have to study for four years whereas one can easily complete his/ her diploma degree in two years. Therefore, this might encourage the pupils to leave the courses midway. Moreover, the national education policy 2020 says that students of the private schools shall be introduced to English at a much earlier age than the Government schools’ students. The academic syllabus will be taught in the respective regional languages of Government school students. This, therefore, becomes one of the major drawbacks of this said policy as this will enhance the number of students being uncomfortable in communicating in English resulting in the widening of the gap between different sections of the societies.
CONCLUSION
With the initiation of NEP 2020, a number of significant changes have been established and one out of those is the discontinuation of the M. Phil course. Even though there are some downhills to the new education policy, the uphills are more in number. Therefore, it is believed and expected by many that through implementing such changes as proposed, the Indian academic system can surely be taken a step higher in the long run.
